Favorite quote from your favorite book:

We’ve already established that Nabokov is my favorite writer and that Ada is my favorite of his books. Not to be too creative or anything, but my favorite book by any writer is also Ada. And my favorite quote?

“But this exclaimed Ada, “is certain, this is reality, this is pure fact – this forest, this moss, you hand, the ladybird on my leg, this cannot be taken away, can it? (it will, it was). This has all come together here, no matter how the paths twisted, and fooled each other, and got fouled up: they inevitably met here!” (153)

So much of what I wrote about time and memory in Ada is in evidence here. The obsession Ada and Van have with preserving memories, and not just with preserving them but with finding some way to make memories subjective and exact. The unclear nature of the time – who wrote “(it will, it was)” and when did they write it, and why? That this moment Ada is describing shows up in the book suggests one thing, that parenthetical remark another.
